During Disney’s Quarter 1 earnings call today, CEO Bob Iger announced animated sequels to classic Disney films Toy Story, Frozen, and Zootopia.

Today I’m so pleased to announce that we have sequels in the works from our animation studios to some of our most popular franchises, Toy Story, Frozen and Zootopia. We’ll have more to share about these productions soon, but this is a great example of how we’re leaning into our unrivaled brands and franchises.

The news was likely there to soften the blow of a $5.5 billion cost savings by Disney. That “savings” means over 7,000 jobs are getting cut at Disney.

The most recent installments of those films were massive hits for Disney at the box office and beyond. Frozen 2 grossed $1.45 billion, Toy Story 4 grossed $1.07 billion, and Zootopia grossed $1.02 billion. Disney’s films of late haven’t hit those massive marks with Strange World getting dumped in theaters with little fanfare to $74 million. Encanto only made $256 million in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. That film however saw massive viewership numbers on Disney+.

As for release dates or other information, that’s unknown at this time. It’s part of Disney’s animated strategy to continue with original animated films like the upcoming Elemental from Pixar.
