We just passed Return of the Living Dead day on July 3rd, but we’ve got some news about an upcoming reboot/re-imagining of the classic horror-comedy. The franchise includes five movies all about zombies that are smarter than your average Romero-Zombie. The company Living Dead Media is coming up with a reboot of the series after two direct-to-TV sequels in 2005.
Director Steve Wolsh is attached to direct. According to the company’s official website the next installment won’t simply remake the original classic, it’ll reboot it. Now that’s kind of a slippery slope when it comes to wording. What exactly is the difference between a reboot and a remake? They have an explanation on their website for what they plan to do with the movie.
“Our reboot of Return of the Living Dead will expand the existing world created by the original 5 films, while staying true to the R-rated, sci-fi, horror, dark comedy roots adored by fans of the cult classic around the world for the last 35 years.”
Return of the Living Dead spawned five movies, the original, Return of the Living Dead II, Return of the Living Dead 3 directed by Brian Yuzna, and then two awful sequels that were rushed and under budgeted in Necropolis and Rave to the Grave.
Are you a huge fan of the original film? After 35 years, it still holds up incredibly well on multiple viewings. It’ll be hard to capture the blend of comedy, horror, and societal commentary on display from the first film.
