Funimation announces that their app will launch on the Nintendo Switch. Now Switch users too can watch anime in between sessions of games like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Assuming that anyone buys a Switch for any other game, that is.
Funimation announced on Twitter and their own website that their anime streaming app will become available on Nintendo Switch. This app will be available to download starting December 15, 2020; which is tomorrow at the time of this writing. You can download the app from the Nintendo eShop, where all the other stuff is.
Funimation Taking Over Everything!
With this launch of the Funimation app on the Nintendo Switch, Funimation is now officially the first (and only) app for the console. In fact, it’s now one of exactly two streaming platforms for the Switch. The first was Hulu back on October 9, 2020.
Plus, the Funimation app on the Switch is actually a brand new version designed specifically for the next-gen consoles like the PS5 and Xbox Series. This app is making its debut on the Switch, but all the other apps on the other consoles will eventually update to look like this. The update includes, quote:
- “A brand-new look and feel”
- “All-new curations and a “My Anime” page”
- “Anime launch schedule”
- “And much, much more!”
If you look at the screenshots, you can see that the newly updated Funimation app seems to bear more of a resemblance to Crunchyroll. It’s not surprising. Sony, the parent company of Funimation, is currently in the process of buying Crunchyroll from AT&T. With both anime streaming platforms soon to be owned by the same company, it’s no surprise that said company would want to make them more similar. The real question is: will there even be a need for two separate apps anymore? Guess we’ll just have to find out later, when Sony decides to give us some more official news on the subject.
