The first Lord of the Rings anime project will begin streaming soon. Lord of the Rings: War of the Rohirrim officially arrives on Max February 28. The film will also get a linear premiere on HBO Saturday, March 1 at 8pm ET/PT.
Based on author J.R.R. Tolkien’s characters and expansive fantasy world, War of the Rohirrim takes place 183 years before the events chronicled in Peter Jackson’s original live-action film trilogy. The animated feature tells the fate of the House of Helm Hammerhand, the legendary King of Rohan.
In the film, a sudden attack by Wulf, a clever and ruthless Dunlending lord seeking vengeance for the death of his father, forces Helm and his people to make a daring last stand in the ancient stronghold of the Hornburg— a mighty fortress that will later come to be known as Helm’s Deep. Finding herself in an increasingly desperate situation, Héra, the daughter of Helm, must summon the will to lead the resistance against a deadly enemy intent on their total destruction.
The project comes from director Kenji Kamiyama (Blade Runner: Black Lotus).
The voice cast includes Brian Cox (“Succession”) as Helm Hammerhand, the mighty King of Rohan; Gaia Wise (“A Walk in the Woods”) as his daughter Hěra; and Luke Pasqualino (“Snowpiercer”) as Wulf. Miranda Otto also reprises her live-action trilogy role as Eěowyn, Shieldmaiden of Rohan, who serves as the tale’s narrator. The ensemble also includes Lorraine Ashbourne, Yazdan Qafouri, Benjamin Wainwright, Laurence Ubong Williams, Shaun Dooley , Michael Wildman, Jude Akuwudike, Bilal Hasna, and Janine Duvitski.
